Flower Power....

These students were on my Sugar Flower course in SCOLA (Sutton College) which completed on 25 May 2012.  Once again, the students had little or no experience of making sugar flowers and after week 8 (at only two hours a week), they did a fabulous job and certainly made me proud.  It was encouraging to watch those who had struggled initially embark on a journey, week by week and begin to grow in confidence.

The combination of flowers made included; roses, rose buds and their leaves, stephanotis, blossoms, carnations, and stargazer lilies.  Some students dusted their flowers and leaves with colours to add depth and a touch of realism.

Here a some examples and some student pictures :-)

The WOW Factor Wedding Cake!

A beautifully elegant wedding cake made by one of my students, Katie studying cake decorating  at Croydon Adult Learners And Training (CALAT) college.  I believe this is her first attempt at a wedding cake and it is awesome.  I am sure the friend she made it for was extremely happy with the outcome.

Arum Lily & Stacked (tiered) Cake Project

Arum Lilies as made by Emma at CALAT.
What is very absolutely brilliant is that many of the students had never made these or any other flowers before and most had not used fondant  or covered a cake, but they all produced amazing results.  The project for my students was to cover real fruit cakes (made by the students) in marzipan and fondant a.k.a sugar paste, stack them in a secure manner, stencil a side design, & pipe shell or other designs around the base of the cakes with royal icing.  Some of the students who had more experience piped microdots on the base of the cakes.  Then finally students were required to make Calla (Arum) Lilies and leaves.  Some of my students decided to showcased roses.

Here are the results:

Mmm...more-ish Malteser Cake

Another creation by Naheed.

The Maltesers are so light they're floating away from the box...
